LOS ANGELES – The global television phenomenon that captivated American audiences is set to conclude this week, as the third and final season of “Squid Game” premieres on Netflix this Friday, June 27, promising a definitive end to the harrowing saga of Seong Gi-hun.
The six-episode final season will pick up immediately from the grim cliffhanger of Season 2, which saw Gi-hun’s rebellion crushed and his spirit seemingly broken. After witnessing the public execution of his closest ally, Gi-hun (played by Emmy-winner Lee Jung-jae) is now driven by a singular, darker purpose: revenge against The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and the entire shadowy organization behind the deadly competition.
According to the season’s official synopsis, this final chapter will test the limits of its protagonist’s resolve. “Gi-hun will be forced to make some important choices in the face of overwhelming despair as he and the surviving players are thrust into deadlier games that test everyone’s resolve,” Netflix stated. “With each round, their choices lead to increasingly grave consequences.”
The Squid Game Creator’s Final Question
Series creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk described the final season as the ultimate test of his protagonist’s soul, designed to ask one final, profound question to its massive global audience.
“I wanted to focus on how we should remain humans even amidst this intense competition,” Hwang said in a recent interview. He explained that the new games are engineered to “bring out the bottom parts of human nature,” forcing viewers and characters alike to question if empathy and conscience can survive in an arena built on betrayal. For American viewers who turned the show into a cultural touchstone, debating its moral quandaries online and at home, this final test promises a powerful and thought-provoking conclusion.
The End of a Television Era
This season marks the definitive end of the story that began in 2021 and became Netflix’s most-watched series of all time, holding a unique grip on American pop culture with its iconic games, costumes, and unforgettable twists. The decision to film Seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back was made to deliver a swift and cohesive finale to Gi-hun’s journey.
While Hwang is firm that this is the last chapter for this story, he has hinted that the world he built may not be gone for good, suggesting the possibility of future “spinoffs” set within the Squid Game universe.
The surviving cast from the brutal second season will return, including Wi Ha-jun as detective Hwang Jun-ho, alongside Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, and Park Sung-hoon as players whose loyalties will be tested in the final rounds.
All six episodes of the final season of “Squid Game” will be available to stream nationwide on Netflix starting at 3 a.m. Eastern Time / 12 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, June 27.
