Brad Pitt Admits His “Hair Was on Fire” Before Getting Sober
The ‘Fight Club’ star gets candid about hitting rock bottom and his journey with Alcoholics Anonymous.
Brad Pitt is laying it all bare, revealing that his entry into Alcoholics Anonymous wasn’t at a high point in his life. Joining fellow actor and recovery veteran Dax Shepard on the “Armchair Expert” podcast, Pitt didn’t mince words about the reality of his situation following his much-publicized 2016 split from Angelina Jolie.
“I was pretty much on my back, on my knees. I was really open. I was trying anything anyone threw at me,” Pitt confessed about his first AA meeting. “It was a particular difficult time. I needed rebooting. I needed to wake the f**k up in some areas.”
Shepard, who also attends AA, cosigned the sentiment, stating, “You don’t come into AA because everything’s working out fantastic.”
“No,” Pitt agreed. “That’s usually not the entry point.”
The raw conversation continued with Shepard adding, “It’s not the winner’s club. Your hair has gotta be on fire before you go like, ‘Yeah, I’ll go hang with a bunch of dudes and talk about emotions.’”
This isn’t the first time Pitt has spoken about his decision to get sober. In a 2019 interview with The New York Times, he stated, “I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges.”
The actor, who is set to star in the upcoming “F1: The Movie,” also owned up to his own stubbornness but emphasized his commitment to taking responsibility for his actions. “When I’ve stepped in s**t, I’m pretty good at taking responsibility for it and owning up to it,” Pitt said. He now sees it as a “quest to what can I do with this and how can I right this and make sure it doesn’t happen again…Be better, step up.”
Pitt also shared that the honesty of the other men in his recovery group was a source of inspiration, turning the meetings into something he “looked forward to.”
“F1: The Movie” is scheduled to hit theaters on June 27.
